I'm a huge fan of this restaurant. It's always busy, which is obviously a sign of good food. However, there's rarely a long wait. They turn the tables over pretty quickly, so it's relatively easy to get in... Even on a Saturday night. Their sushi is prepared quickly and I've liked everything I've ever ordered from here. I normally order 2 tuna hand rolls without rice, and 2 salmon hand rolls without rice (they give hefty portions of fish), the tako su (octopus salad), and sometimes Mandu soup (fish broth with dumplings, crab, seaweed, and some other things). I've tried a lot of their rolls, all of which are delicious! Their sushi chefs are fantastic! The service is very good-- for the most part. There is one waitress who is extremely loud and it drives me crazy when she's shouting across the place. Another thing that irks me is this woman (who I would assume to be the owner) is sometimes there (usually dressed in extremely casual clothes-- I've seen her in what looks to be pajamas) and she's usually chit chatting with the staff... Here's the part that bothers me... She has never once gone around to tables asking how their food is or how the service is. I've never seen her so much as carry a glass of water to a table or get a refill for a customer. I'm not saying she doesn't do this, but I've never seen it... Not even at the busiest times. All in all, their prices are in line with other sushi restaurants in the area, service is pretty good and food is fantastic! Even their bathroom is always clean!

Food is great! You have got to try the Mandu soup. Atmosphere is friendly and casual. Service is reasonable. Servers are very pleasant.

First time at Samurai, though my youngest daughter frequents this place with her friends. Now I see why! Delicious sushi rolls, although I was disappointed they were out of Japanese Red Snapper. Our server recommended Yellow Fin Tuna, and it was a fine substitution. Yummy gyoza, ever-so-light tempura batter on the veggies - overall, a terrific place.

Excellent Sushi purveyor in Orchard Lake. Interior is casual but inviting with comfortable tables. Wide range of sushi rolls and sashimi, plus Japanese items from a non-sushi menu. On our first visit we focused on the Sushi ! All the rolls we sampled were well-done -- fresh and tasty. Standard offerings were on the menu, as well as some creative options. Samurai crunch roll (if I'm remembering the name) was outstanding, and they had an interesting variant of a California roll, lightly fried and very delicious. Service was attentive despite being quite busy on a Sunday evening.

Still the best sushi in the area, by far. Yes, it's on the $$$ side, but it's sooooo worth it compared to other places. This is one of the few places where the sushi comes out cold and the hot rolls come out fresh and too hot to eat. They have also added saki and beer to the menu, all reasonably priced in comparison to other places. There are always people in here, and there is no question as to why. The soft shell crab roll is to die for, as is most of their custom rolls...best place by far.

I was taken here one day with a few friends and I had never had sushi before. This restaurant was definitely the right place to try sushi. The environment is very authentic seeming, and the service is great. Everything is brought out as prepared so it is as fresh as possible, and they have great vegetarian options. The miso soup is a great starter, and the vegetable fried rice, although it comes in far too large of proportions, is excellent. It comes with a layer of egg on top, drizzled with a sauce that gives it a unique taste. I got the AAC roll (avocado, cucumber, and asparagus) and was pleasantly surprised. All of the friends I went with were extremely satisfied with their service, food, and price. I would definitely recommend sushi samurai to anyone.

Horrible name, but solid Sushi/Korean/Japanese/Fusion. My parents introduced me to this restaurant shortly after it opened, and it has become my go-to sit-down sushi restaurant. I was initially skeptical, as I grew up in the area and had known this place as a Burger King. However, I was quickly won over by the staff and the quality of food. They always start you out with an amuse bouche size cucumber and crab salad with some sort of rice wine or vinegar. I nice way to start a meal. For sushi, I am particularly a fan of the Orchard Lake Roll (Tuna, salmon, white tuna, crab meat, fish egg, scallions with spicy sauce inside) and the Yellow Tail Special (4 Thin slices of Yellowtail, Jalapeno pepper and spicy sauce, with Ponzu sauce). However, this restaurant also serves up some great non-sushi dishes as well. I am a particularly a fan of the calamari steak (a squid filet in a teriyaki type sauce), the samurai pancake (Shrimp, Chicken, Calamari, Onion, Carrot, Mushroom, Scallion, bonito, mayo, spicy and okonomiyaki sauce) and the udon. I still feel Noble Fish is better for sushi, but prefer this place overall because of the larger menu. Also, if you become a regular, they quick to offer "service", free food. Also, they tend to give you free samples of there latest culinary experiments. Not all of them have been hits, but it is always fun to try new things. This is a great utility sushi joint and I highly recommend it.

This is my favorite sushi spot. We keep coming for a great selection of fresh rolls. There are many selections that are cooked or vegetarian. My favorite is the dragon roll. We have carried out for years, but recently started dining in. The dining room is a no-nonsense place to eat good sushi. The food is always top-rate and the service is good and efficient. You can order a decent glass of wine, which is a plus. It is a good casual place to bring a family and stay for while, or just drop in for a fast bite.

Best sushi place in MI!! The mussel soup is awesome.

Came here with my Mom for a lunch date and were caught off guard when our waitress sighed when we asked questions. Less food for same price and sub par service...your choice :)

By far my favorite sushi place in Michigan! The S&T roll, salsa roll and orchard lake roll are my shit!!!!!
(5)Joyce T.
My husband and I really love the sushi here. The wait staff is always sweet and polite. The sushi is always made with the freshest ingredients. Our favorites to order: shrimp tempura roll, California roll, dragon roll, teriyaki roll,(for us Korean folks, it's a bulgoki roll ) the garden salad with ginger dressing (always so fresh and crisp) and miso soup. Your order comes with a delicious cucumber salad. We like to order the shrimp tempura appetizer, it has shrimp and veggies. Delicious!!! The restaurant and restrooms are always clean too. One thing we notice every time we are there, it seems like they have an employee meal together. I love that, because I know that the employees are treated right there. :) I hope this review helps you and you love it just as much as we do!

First off I had An $80.00 pick up order, and when I walked in with my order they acted as if I inconvenienced them by bring them the order. I was treated very rudely. This was not the first time this has happened, but will be the last.

Visited Samurai Sushi today or the first time. Customer service was completely missing as owners are absentee. Very dissappointed in service overall. We had to get our own water to give you an idea of how the meal started. The food was actually pretty good. With so many places nearby with great service, like Mene Sushi for instance, I probably won't be back.

Great sushi all the time. The sunshine roll is great. A little spicy but great and it's only 6 buck! Great service too! Oh the dragon till and samurai crunch rolls are great too.
(5)Marc W.
Went to lunch and ordered the boat. Waited for food and my friend received his food... but no boat... it came late and food was cold.
(2)Michael R.
Been here multiple times and I love it the sushi is fresh and they let you add stuff to your roll so if you don't go in and try this place then you have made a mistake I have went to this place for many years. Also the wait staff is not the best but if you go there enough they will get to know you better and they get better each time ps I've been there enough I have a specialty roll that is very good called the mpr roll it's the calamari roll with crab cucumber and cream cheese and don't forget to ask for a side of warm teriyaki sauce it completes the whole roll.
(5)Rebecca B.
Yum! We got carry out so I know nothing of the "dine in" experience. But we were super pleased with our rolls. Avocado, spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls - yum, yum and yum. Miso soup? Yum. It appears as though they are remodeling a store front further down the strip mall which will be a larger location and probably more updated to satisfy people that are worried about the ambiance.

Good food. We are regulars for many years

My hubby and I would drive by this place and would always mention how we needed to eat here so finally one night we pulled in. The restaurant is very cozy so I was glad to see that there was a table open for two. The sushi roll menu is pretty long so it took us a while to figure out which rolls we were going to get. They give you a little cucumber salad for free which I thought was cute! We ordered a roll that had fried calamari in it which I've never seen in a roll before, it was really tender! The thing that threw us both off is that the rolls were half the size as other sushi places so instead of 12 pieces for a bigger roll you only get 6 which the price reflects but then again that means you can order more rolls! Another thing that was weird, in a good way, was that all the customers in the restaurant were laughing and smiling! So maybe there's some secret mojo flying around in this restaurant?! Enjoy!

I stopped in for late lunch...ordered a draft beer as the banner for the draft beer was displayed...answer was no draft beer...ordered the lunch special...after more than 15 minutes of waiting...waitress came and said lunch time was over...which I was told 2PM...but order was placed before 2PM...Asked why I was not told that lunch special can not be ordered when I placed an order...but there was no answer...I just walked out...and will not go back there again!!!

New to the area, and was craving sushi, so I yelp'd my options out. Sushi Samurai was my #1 choice by the looks of yelp reviewers. Unfortunately I had a different experience. No matter how good the sushi apparently is there, horrible service will ruin the entire dining experience. My boyfriend and I walked in, the door is less than a few feet from the hostess who greets and seats you. She doesn't acknowledge us for a few minutes, she then asks how many of us (I stated 2) then mumbles about either having a seat or waiting or she was mumbling to herself about what she was typing on the computer, not sure, regardless, we waited standing patiently. We were shortly seated after that. After that moment, we were completely ignored for 20 mins. My boyfriend and I looked through their menu: they have a check-off list style of menu where we quickly picked the edamame as an appetizer and 4 special rolls we were most interested in. We placed the menu's on top of each other with the check-off list and pencil on top and pushed it to the side of our table, and then we waited. and waited.. and waited.. Its a small restaurant so we must not have been invisible, and we weren't seated in a corner we were in the center of the room. There were roughly 3 waitresses and not one served us water, or offered to take our appetizer menu OR ANYTHING. Nothing. All of them walked past us, though near enough to possibly send an apology our way that they were busy and would be with us as soon as they can, but nope, nothing. It's understandable that they were busy, but no water, no apology, no acknowledgement, thats really bad. We got right up and walked out, the hostess couldn't even be bothered to look at us as she saw us walk right out the door. Fortunately there's another sushi establishment in the same parking lot called Chopstix... go there: everything you could want in courteous restaurant service and the sushi bar is readily available in that establishment, prompt and with all smiles. It also has a more appealing sushi restaurant decor and feel. Samurai Sushi reminded me of a diner.

Everyone in the place is friendly. When you walk in even every sushi chef says hello. The volcano roll I had with soft shell crab was the best I have ever had. Portions are extremely large and not just all rice. The simple salad was tasty and fresh . Great experience. Try it!
(5)Nick G.
Delicious food! Fast service! Free wifi! Great prices. New neighborhood gem in my book!
(5)Julie J.
Quite simply, awesome sushi!! I tried a little of everything. The rolls are amazing.....works of art and the combination of flavors and textures just knocks you out. The miso is very good as is the little cucumber salad they serve you. Service can be a little spotty, but I have had no real issues. This is my 2nd favorite place to get sushi; number 1 being Wasabi in Detroit. Always fresh and yummy!

I live in San Francisco, eating sushi as often as I can and I have been to some amazing sushi places and some terrible sushi places. I came to Michigan about a week ago for a month visit and was craving some tasty raw fish so I checked yelp looking for a place that might not give me food poisoning. Enter sushi samurai; high reviews so I had my fingers crossed but being so far away from anywhere known for sushi, I didn't expect much. I was with my father and sister, neither of which were too experienced with sushi so we sit at the sushi bar. The service was immediate and looking at the menu, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were quite a few options. This is a Korean sushi place so they had rolls and sushi but they also had typical korean dishes. The bulgogi was decent but my father who got it had last had it in South Korea about 20 years ago. Chicken teriyaki, my sister said was surprisingly good... Sushi, oh my god. Melt in your mouth delicious. The sushi chef was quick to give recommendations and encourage my sister who I was admittedly forcing to try the different types of fish. I have only had better a couple times in California so that's saying a lot. I have no clue where they fly this stuff in from but it's top notch. I will be going back as soon as I need another sushi fix. Everything about this place as far as what I tried was amazing.

This place is a cute little sushi bar on Orchard Lake. There are several of these along Orchard Lake in West Bloomfield and Farmington Hills, but this is one of the better ones. Sushi Samurai has delicious sushi with great lunch specials. I'm a big fan of lunch specials, and I wish there were more in the area. My favorite is the Roll Special, which comes with one California roll (6 pieces), one spicy tuna (6 pieces), and one vegetable roll (4 pieces). All the lunch specials come with miso soup. Whatever you get, they give you a small cucumber salad with a bit of crab stick. If you feel like going for dinner or want more than just lunch specials, there are some really good specialty rolls that are larger in size.

Out of the many sushi places on orchard lake road (and I've been to at least 5 different resturants), I think this place has the best tasting sushi!
(4)Karen J.
Tasty, fresh sushi. Non-greasy tempura. Good service, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices. I'm happy.

I was pleasantly surprised by Sushi Samurai. its in a location where i feared the worst wondering about how much turnover the Sashimi would get , but firstly the service was superb, friendly prompt & professional & the food was not half bad. I ordered a mixed Sashimi plate, Maguro, Himachi, uni & hiramai as well as Shrimp Tempura roll for bulk, they were served with an excellent ginger, very fresh, sliced to perfection & with the right degree of crunch.the meal was preceded with a cucumber salad appetizer which was very tasty. The decor was like a hundred suburban Japanese sushi bars i have eaten in, very welcoming with a bar area for the serious Sashimi aficionado. I really liked this place, no its not Sharuku & i feel it is a tad expensive for the standard ($20 for lunch) it is a pet peeve of mine that good inexpensive Sushi joints just don't exist in USA. Where are the excellent Sushi Tei, Sakai Sushi Carousel Sushi parlors prevalent in Asia where you can very very well for just a few bucks???? well until i open a few up & make my fortune the likes of Sushi Samurai will have to do. Yes I'm glad i came here & i will return i felt very invited & the food was really quite good.

I agree with another reviewer about the level of service. I went in for carry out during a slow period. There was one customer and someone that came in after me for carry out. I stood right in front at least 15 minutes without even being acknowledged. Of course the hostess was on the phone and that had to be her priority over a customer. I finally found a waitress to take our order of various types of sushi, appetizers and an udon noodle soup. After getting our order I checked it in the car. The first sushi order was right but that was it. A various combination of different appetizers that I did not order, none of the other sushi I ordered and received broth without the noodles. I was already unhappy with the level of service and then to mess up the order this badly was unbelievable. Went back in and returned my food. Will NEVER return. Service is really important and that is something they do not provide.

The BEST sushi -- either dine in or carry out. The Ocean Fire appetizer is fantastic. The fish selections are always super fresh and the chefs are more than accommodating if you want them to leave an ingredient out or add something. If you dine in, the wait staff is friendly and accommodating to families with young kids. The complimentary cucumber salad as a starter and the fresh orange wedges to end the meal really make whole dining experience special. This is by far my favorite restaurant!
(5)Ania M.
If you haven't been here in a few months, they now have a liquor license if you like sake with your meal, and they've also added brown rice to the menu.
(4)H K.
Yes the sushi is good and fresh! But it is such a rip off; I will only go here if someone is treating me! Who still offers caned pop verse fountain pop?? Places that rip off customers The place is so small that you stink so bad after you leave.
(3)Abe S.
Favorite sushi so far but it can get pricey but nice a nice treat from time to time. Very clean and friendly staff
(5)Gayle Halebian L.
Best sushi in all of Detroit and being in the WB is just an added bonus!! We were their first customers in their original location and have never been disappointed by the food or service!
(5)Nha V.
Good sushi! Fresh ingredients & very authentic. Has good prices for lunch menu. The udon is very good. Manhattan roll is my favorite. Only place that has it.
(5)Jenny F.
I was a loyal Mene Sushi goer since the day they opened and that was my favorite spot on my side of town for many years. Recently i started going to Samurai Sushi and i am addicted to it. White Dragon Roll with fried calmari is simply to die for i think i can just eat that for breakfast lunch and dinner. Yellowtale sashimi appetizer is simply melting in your mouth i highly recommed this place for sushi.
(5)Jennifer B.
I only eat the tempura rolls, with smelt row on it. I don't eat the raw fish because I am worried about parasites. Well. Despite avoiding raw fish, I DID get a parasite. I was sick with it for months. It was a horrible experience. I don't recommend it.
(1)Sasha D.
This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in West Bloomfield area. Great variety of rolls and excellent quality. Price isn't bad either.
(5)Annie B.
Small Japanese/Sushi restaurant with great food! Ordered sashimi, handrolls & Samurai roll. Would highly recommend the soft-shell crab!
(4)Kimberly J.
The best sushi in the Bloomfield / Commerce area! This is one of the only places that knows how to make cucumber rolls the right way. The salmon cucumber special is definitely worth a try and we always order the white dragon roll (with no rice). Plus, the TVs all around the dining room are the only reason my husband agreed to eat out during the playoffs.
(5)Henry B.
I went here with my sister and her ex-boyfriend who didn't like sushi. They had some pretty good sushi here. Soft shell crab roll is the money. The food here was pretty fresh. I wasn't a fan of the atmosphere here though. The decor is really dated. Sushi is usually a food that's enjoyed with conversation so atmosphere is very important at these places. The lunch specials here are great so I recommend going here for lunch.
(3)Carolyn J.
Very good sushi. Not so much for the wine selections.
(4)Ryan P.
For sushi on the west side you can't go wrong. The prices and quality are fair. They have been rated great by hour magazine and I would say hour got it right. The atmosphere isn't the greatest but for a small place you can't do much. There is a lot of selections and combinations to go with. Carryout is also a good choice if you want something while on the go or out on the boat.
(4)Adam B.
Best Japanese food in Michigan. The sushi is fresh and the rolls thick and interesting. The tempura is light and crisp. The restaurant is small and insanely popular on Friday and Saturday night so either call ahead or be prepared to wait. Family run and lots of locals and repeat customers
